An experienced midfielder is set to come down from Music City.
Wake up y’all, late night transfer news just dropped.
According to a report from Tom Bogert of The Athletic, Atlanta United is nearing a deal to sign two-time Supporters’ Shield winner and experienced midfielder Dax McCarty.
McCarty, 36, has over 466 appearances in his long MLS career spanning five different clubs. He most recently spent four years with Nashville SC as the club’s first captain, totaling 121 appearances for the Coyotes before entering free agency at the end of 2023.
His longest stint was with New York Red Bulls between 2011 and 2016 where McCarty made 198 appearances and won Supporters’ Shields in 2013 and 2015.
Debuting in 2009, McCarty has 13 caps for the US senior national team, where he formed part of the Gold Cup champion team in 2017.
McCarty will now fill the role of veteran leader in midfield after Ozzie Alonso’s contract expired at the end of last season. While details of his contract are not yet available, it’s reasonable to assume that he will take on a senior minimum (or something similar) salary to join the Five Stripes.
