Phoenix Rising FC’s Championship-Winning Coach Juan Guerra Heads to MLS
In a surprising turn of events, Juan Guerra, the stalwart head coach of Phoenix Rising FC, is paving a new path for his career. Guerra, who led Phoenix Rising to its first USL Championship title, will be leaving the club to join a Major League Soccer team. Albeit Phoenix Rising opted not to divulge the MLS club Guerra will be joining, reports suggest that he’s bound for Houston Dynamo FC, slated to serve as an assistant coach.
Transition to Major League Soccer
Guerra’s departure comes on the heels of the MLS club acquiescing to a buyout clause in his contract. The coach expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to guide Phoenix Rising to championship victory and looked forward to embarking on the next chapter of his career. With this move, Guerra has made it clear that the time has come for him to take a step forward, underlining his belief that a move to an MLS head coach role directly from a USL team was unlikely.
Phoenix Rising’s Triumph Under Guerra
Guerra took the reins as head coach of Phoenix Rising in August 2022, succeeding Rick Schantz. His leadership and exceptional man management skills have been crucial in the club’s triumphant run. Guerra’s tenure saw the team unify and strive for victory, culminating in an impressive performance in the 2023 USL playoffs. Phoenix Rising emerged victorious in four consecutive road games, clinching the championship in a dramatic penalty shootout against Charleston.
Looking Ahead
Phoenix Rising has not yet unveiled its plans for a new head coach. However, the club’s President, Bobby Dulle, lauded Guerra for his achievements and wished him the best for his future endeavors. Amidst this transition, Phoenix Rising is slated to commence its preseason on January 27 against the Portland Timbers, with the regular season kicking off on March 9, at home against Birmingham Legion FC.
