Chiefs fans could need amputation after coldest game in NFL history

Some Kansas City Chiefs fans have been told to consider amputations after suffering frostbite from the Jan. 13 Wild Card game against the Dolphins.

According to the Kansas City Star, three patients were hospitalized for frostbite after the game, at which windchills measured at -27 degrees.

Dr. Megan Garcia, Director of the Grossman Burn Center Medical Director, told Fox 4 that 70% of the patients admitted for frostbite have been advised to undergo amputations.

“The patients who had their frostbite injuries along with the Chiefs game, they are just getting to the point now we are starting to discuss their amputations that might be necessary,” Garcia said, via Fox 4.

“It’s still a lifelong process. They’ll have sensitivity and pain for the rest of their lives and always will be more susceptible to frostbite in the future. So we are also educating them to make sure they stay warm for the years and months to come,” she said.

The Kansas City Star reports that the extreme cold that hit the area in January led to at least 11 cases of frostbite and one death.
