Reader beware: these upcoming horror games are waiting in the shadows for the perfect time to strike. Last year was thrilling time for fans of run-and-gun terrors like Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, and Dead Space, while Alan Wake 2's signature blend of psychological horror was the spooky season treat we all needed. There's a lot more to get excited about though, especially as we anticipate what the new games for 2024 have in store for us fans of all things that go bump in the night.
We're especially intrigued by Japanese body horror Slitterhead, Bloober Team's upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, and a recently-announced Xbox project from Hideo Kojima himself. Alas, we won't see Alone In The Dark until March thanks to a second delay, but what we've seen in our hands-on preview suggests it could be worth the wait.
There's a lot more besides just these, of course, and if you don’t want to be patient, you can always check out the best horror games to play right now to slake your thirst. Our focus here is on all the upcoming PS5 games, new PC games, and upcoming Xbox Series X games that look set to deliver terrifying experiences across a litany of subgenres, so jot down these upcoming horror games so you never miss a single trick (or treat).
This collection of upcoming horror games was edited on January 22, 2024, removing The Last of Us 2 Remaster following its recent release and adding horror-adjacent dark fantasy game Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.
The top upcoming horror games to watch for
Upcoming horror games: 2024
Pacific Drive
Developer: Ironwood Studios
Platform(s): PC, PS5
Release date: February 22, 2024
Merging aspects of the best survival games with some truly creepy atmosphere, Pacific Drive is one upcoming horror game that stands out from the rest. It's a first-person adventure that takes place largely from the front seat of your car, stranding you out on the open road with nothing but your wits and makeshift crafting options to guide you. In a world "full of unstable, reality shifting anomalies that can tear you and the car to pieces if you're not careful," our Pacific Drive preview leads us to believe that developer Ironwood Studios has a hell of a debut title on its hands.
Sons of the Forest
Developer: Endnight Games
Platform(s): PC
Release date: February 22, 2024
One year since it launched into Early Access, the wilderness beckons in Sons of the Forest's full release in February. Stranded in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by danger, this open-world survival horror crafting adventure puts you face to face with numerous terrors. Whether it's the cannibalistic tribe hunting you down, or the hostile beats whose territory you've encroached upon, nowhere is safe in Endnight Games' long awaited sequel to the viral game that started it all back in 2018.
The Outlast Trials
Developer: Red Barrels
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS4, PS5,
Release date: March 5, 2024
It's been in Early Access for months now, but multiplayer psycho-terror The Outlast Trials will be with us in all its gory glory this March. The third entrant in Red Barrels' nightmarish series sees up to four players fighting for their lives in a sadistic playground that wouldn't go amiss in some of the best horror movies. You can choose to go in alone in solo mode too, if you dare, but with no weapons to help you directly engage in combat with the monsters lurking in the dark, it's more than a little risky.
Alone in the Dark
Developer: Pieces Interactive
Platform(s): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC
Release date: March 20, 2024
Jodie Comer? David Harbour? No, this isn’t some Netflix exclusive thriller. Alone in the Dark stars both actors and we even have to choose between them to explore the iconic mysterious Derceto Manor of the original game. There are plenty of pulp 1920s trappings here but this looks like an incredible reimagining of the original game with a focus on real horror and atmosphere. The star talent here has us even more intrigued. Especially as playing as each character will give us a slightly different version of the story as young Emily Hartwood hires a jaded private investigator to help her hunt for her missing uncle.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
Developer: Ninja Theory
Platform(s): Xbox Series X, PC
Release date: May 21, 2024
The sequel to one of the most harrowing games of 2017 is on the way in Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2. Ninja Theory's darkly beautiful action-adventure is making a comeback, and although Hellblade 2 is not touted as an upcoming horror game specifically, it's hard not to see it as one. Desolate landscapes ooze gothic sublimity as Senua battles with not only external horrors, but her own mental health in a Norse mythology-inspired world where reality is hard to distinguish from fantasy. Hellblade 2 has all the visual semantics of psychological horror while not vilifying its heroine for her struggles, and that makes it one deeply unnerving dark fantasy game worth your time in 2024.
Upcoming horror games: TBC 2024
Autopsy Simulator
Developer: Woodland Games
Platform(s): PC
Release date: TBC 2024
PC building… power washing… lawn mowing.. It was only a matter of time before we got a somewhat medically accurate autopsy simulator. But the interesting thing about this upcoming PC horror published by Team 17 is that it has a story. If you've ever seen the movie The Autopsy of Jane Doe as Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch discover terrifying secrets surrounding the body of a young woman, expect similar creepy goings on here. We play as a middle aged pathologist uncovering strange occurrences as he slices and dices through his day job.
Paranormal Tales
Developer: Digital Cybercherries
Platform(s): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC
Release date: TBC 2024
Of all of the horror subgenres, found footage crawls under your skin in a very specific way. On the surface, our brains know that this is fiction but the shaky handheld footage from phones or even body cams demands to be taken seriously as a threat. Cue Paranormal Tales, a terrifying looking Unreal Engine 5 creation that lets us play various found footage files, encouraging us to explore further into the dark to discover what happened to those who were foolish enough to start hitting record. Expect plenty of movie-influenced jump scares and figures lurking in corners. You didn’t even see the one in the screenshot above, did you..?
Phasmophobia
Developer: Kinetic Games
Platform(s): PC
Release date: TBC 2024
Phantoms, banshees, demons, and wraiths are just a few of the angry ghosts you'll be busting when this upcoming horror game gets a full release. Phasmophobia has been in early access for years now, but according to developer Kinetic Games, the studio is finally planning its full release sometime in "late 2024" (via Steam). It's the ultimate paranormal investigation experience, complete with haunted tarot cards, a vast array of ghost-hunting gear, and full multiplayer support. You've almost definitely seen or heard of it before, and if you've been on the fence about whether to pick up Phasmophobia, this year would be the best time to.
Reveil
Developer: Pixelsplit
Platform(s): PC
Release date: TBC 2024
There’s nothing quite like a trip to the circus, is there? Creepy empty cavernous big tops… Those giant welcoming clown mouths… It’s, quite frankly, in tents… *insert clown nose honk here* Reveil preys on all of those fears as we explore the memories of a man called Walter Thompson. He can’t find his wife and daughter and suddenly can only think of his time as a circus builder in the 1960s... This is a psychological horror game with an apparent focus on puzzles and environmental exploration. The devs warn of both psychedelic and disturbing elements. Why does it always have to be clowns… ?
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Developer: Bloober Team
Platform(s): PS5, PC
Release date: TBC 2024
Finally, the disturbingly contorted cat is out of the bag. It has finally been confirmed that Bloober Team is working on a remake of one of the most legendary horror games of all time. Our trip back into the fog will of course try and evoke all of the atmosphere of James’ original journey but one big change is already clear. For the sake of immersion, there’s now an over-the-shoulder camera to bring us even closer to the horrors lurking in these streets. Errr, thanks? Oh, and it’s tbc for now but apparently the Silent Hill 2 Remake is nearly done so we might not be waiting too long to hear the sound of radio static again…
Still Wakes The Deep
Developer: The Chinese Room
Platform(s): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC
Release date: TBC 2024
One of the many delightful, not to mention terrifying, reveals from June’s excellent Xbox Showcase was this upcoming narrative horror game from Dear Esther and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture devs The Chinese Room. The trailer for Still Wakes The Deep was short but sweet enough to fully convince us that this could be the peak of the new survival horror boom. We don the boots of an offshore oil rig worker who finds himself trapped and alone amidst a deadly North Sea storm. Oh, and the oil rig exits are somehow gone… and there’s something lurking in the empty corridors. *gulp*
Slitterhead
Developer: Bokeh Game Studio
Platform(s): PC confirmed so far
Release date: TBC 2024
Who needs a new Silent Hill game when one of the brains behind the series is working on fresh scares with an all new horror game? Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of both Silent Hill and Forbidden Siren, is the head of Slitterhead devs Bokeh Game Studio. He's even hired the foggy town's composer Akira Yamaoka to terrify our ears as well as our eyes. We're not entirely sure of the plot or even how it will play just yet but expect horrifying twisted monstrosities, dismemberment, and sheer terror and you probably won't be disappointed.
The Casting of Frank Stone
Developer: Supermassive Games
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X
Release date: TBC 2024
The team behind asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight is working with upcoming Little Nightmares 3 developer Supermassive Games to create a "brand new single-player interactive story game". Set in the same universe as Behaviour Interactive's DBD, The Casting of Frank Stone looks set to be a choice-driven narrative adventure that combines the lore of the multiplayer game with Supermassive's signature branching horror gameplay. It will feature an entirely new cast of characters to the ones seen in Behaviour's horror asym, meaning fresh Killer and Survivor lore could be in store. Who knows, maybe Frank et al will make it to the mainline game itself someday?
Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game
Developer: Teravision Games
Platform (s): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC
Release date: TBC 2024
Just when you didn’t think we could have any more horror movie inspired asymmetrical multiplayer experiences along comes a squeaky shoed game we didn’t even know we needed. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game has been pushed to 2024 according to its Steam page, but we're no less excited. Any self respecting 90s kid will have sneakily watched this camp cult classic far too early in life and it looks like the developers are exactly the same. In great news, Teravision Games has Friday the 13th’s Randy Greenback on staff to make sure that the comedy horror translation is as smooth as possible, and the team is even working with the original directors, the Chiodo Brothers. Honk your nose if you’re itching to Klown around with these gun toting Ronald McDonalds.
Little Nightmares 3
Developer: Supermassive Games
Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC
Release date: TBC 2024
This spooky platformer series is getting a third instalment in Little Nightmares 3. We'll be accompanying two new mini-heroes, Low and Alone, as they navigate the treacherous world of Necropolis and beyond. LN3 will be the first game in the series to be developed solely by Supermassive Games since past co-developer Tarsier Studios moved on to other projects. With Supermassive being the mind behind some of the scariest interactive horror titles ever, we can't wait to see how the Dark Pictures Anthology studio brings its unique brand of chills and thrills to the series.
Hollowbody
Developer: Headware Games
Platform(s): PC
Release date: TBC 2024
Ready for a tech-noir love letter to the horror of the classic Silent Hill games? Well the fact that lone developer Nathan Hamley managed to drum up £27K of support on Kickstarter for this survival horror is proof that lots of people definitely are. In Hollowbody, we play as Mica, a so-called Shipper working illegally in a terrifying dystopian Exclusion Zone. She ends up trapped, leaving us to help her escape the horrors with limited resources and, yes, you guessed it, fixed camera angles. Hamley promises logic puzzles, multiple endings and a strong focus on narrative and exploration. You go first, we’ll be right behind you…
TBC
ILL
Developer: Team Clout
Platform(s): PC
Release date: TBC
Revealed at the Future Games Show this year, ILL is an ultra gory survival horror with its bloodshot eyes focussed on pure dismemberment. The monsters here are mutated and tentacled creations all intent on making sure that the last thing you see is a collection of flesh so twisted you don't even really know what killed you. Even more disturbing, is the fact that you're hardly going to have any ammo so you're going to have to get smart about when to engage or when to just hurtle away in the other direction.
OD
Developer: Kojima Productions
Platform(s): Xbox Series X, PC
Release date: TBC
It wouldn't be a Kojima project if it weren't shrouded in mystery, now, would it? A collaboration between ex-Konami developer Hideo Kojima, Xbox Game Studios, and even Jordan Peele, OD is an upcoming horror game that looks less like a game and more like an experience. The brief look we got at OD during The Game Awards 2023 shows it to be suitably creepy and weird, and with A-list talent like Euphoria's Hunter Schaffer on deck, we'll just have to sit tight and wait for more info on this one.
Silent Hill Townfall
Developer: No Code
Platform(s): TBC
Release date: TBC
As part of the bumper Silent Hill: Transmission stream, Silent Hill: Townfall was announced as a brand new addition to the series. If you enjoyed the creeping delights of Stories Untold and Observation then you’ll be pleased to know that Glasgow based dev studio No Code are working on this fresh slice of the franchise. The trailer teasingly didn’t give much away with a man talking over shots of a small pocket television with discussions of punishment and judgement. “It's a real honour for us to bring a new title to this series that both respects the source material, but also does something a little bit different with it,” creative director Jon McKellan said on the stream. This could be very interesting indeed.
Silent Hill f
Developer: Neobards Entertainment
Platform(s): TBC
Release date: TBC
Silent Hill games are definitely like buses full of pyramid heads. You wait 8 years and then three come along at once. Silent Hill f was also announced as part of the Silent Hill: Transmission stream and is another intriguing prospect. The trailer follows a young woman through a city as a strange red War of the Worlds-style weed starts to devour everything. All we’ve got to go on is the official description which says that Silent Hill f is “a completely new story set in 1960s Japan featuring a beautiful, yet horrifying world.” Here we go again….
Routine
Developer: Lunar Software
Platform(s): Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC
Release date: TBC
We're used to long wait times for games after announcements but it's been ten years since sci-fi horror Routine was originally revealed. The re-reveal trailer shows an atmospheric abandoned lunar base of flickering lights and juddering robotic monstrosities. Everything looks pleasingly analogue too as weaponry clicks and clacks into place. Hopefully we don't have to wait another ten years for release but at least we know it will arrive on day one through Game Pass on Xbox Series X and Xbox One.
Terror: Endless Night
Developer: Unseen Silence
Platform(s): PC
Release date: TBA
You’ll want to put an extra pair of socks on for this one, especially if you’ve already watched the first season of The Terror. This strategic survival stressfest isn’t officially affiliated in any way but in Terror: Endless Night we’re tasked with managing a crew aboard a 19th century ship hunting down the missing HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. As we too become trapped in the grip of the ice we’ll have to contend with sickness, fuel, starvation, and choose between life and death for the crew. Sadly, those socks probably aren’t going to keep your sanity in check as reality starts to crumble under the stress of it all. Enjoy?
While you wait for these spooky gems, why not revisit some of the best survival horror games that you can play right now?
