Unity is laying off 25% of its employees in what the company says is part of a company reset heading into 2024. This marks the fourth time in 12 months the company has gone through a round of layoffs.
In a regulatory filing on Monday, the company said that it will let go about 1,800 people from various roles within the company. According to Reuters, CEO Jim Whitehurst sent out a company-wide memo announcing the layoffs on Monday.
“We are … reducing the number of things we are doing in order to focus on our core business and drive our long-term success and profitability,” he said.
The 25% reduction in staff comes after the company let go of 265 people back in November while other layoffs took place back in January and May of last year.
In its statement to IGN, Unity says that it’s “committed to supporting” those impacted by the layoffs.
“Today, as part of our company reset outlined in our Shareholder Letter on November 9, 2023, we announced that Unity has made the difficult decision to implement a workforce reduction, targeting approximately 25% of our total workforce across all teams,” they said. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we extend our deepest gratitude to those affected for their dedication and contributions.
“We are committed to supporting impacted employees through this challenging transition. We appreciate the understanding and support of our community and stakeholders as we navigate these changes together.”
Following a 2023 that saw over 10,000 people let go from the gaming industry, it seems as though 2024 is going to be a year that continues the trend. Unity joins Slipgate Iron Works and Archiact in layoffs so far this year.
