The anime opened with Reito Mizuhara being forced to make a horrifying choice: either he goes into a cryogenic sleep until a cure for his cellular sclerosis is discovered, or face a painful death. Reito understandably chose the former, saying goodbye to his family and the person he loved, Elisa Tachibana.
Unfortunately, when he woke up, the world changed. Due to a seemingly diligent and very narrowly focused virus known as the "MK Virus" (i.e. the Man-Killer Virus), 99.9% of Earth's men died. This left the "heavy burden" of repopulating through procreation on the shoulders of Reito and the very few remaining men.
