D&C Webtoon concluded the manhwa back in 2021, but that was only the beginning of Sung Jin-Woo's journey with fans. The excitement for the Solo Leveling anime adaptation has been evident from the countless fan animations on social media. Well, after a long wait, A-1 Pictures, known for its incredible work on series like Sword Art Online and Fairy Tail, decided to bring us the much-awaited adaptation.

Of course, the Solo Leveling anime has a long way to go, but based on the first two episodes that were provided to us as screeners, it's safe to say that Sung Jin-Woo's story will be a thrilling ride for the anime fandom.

Solo Leveling Anime Is Off To A Strong Start

Sung Jin-Woo in Solo Leveling

The premiere episode doesn't waste any time in introducing us to the world of Hunters. It all starts when mysterious gates start appearing out of nowhere, connecting our world with another dimension. This world on the other side of these shiny gates is full of monsters and supernatural beings, and it's the job of the Hunters to prevent humanity's extinction or enslavement.

These Hunters are divided into five classes based on their physical strength and magical abilities — E-Class Hunters being the weakest and S-Class being the strongest. This story is about the "Weakest Hunter known to all mankind," Sung Jin-Woo.

The premiere does an incredible job of highlighting the dilemma and courage that resides inside Jin-Woo's heart.

Sung Jin-Woo is well aware of his weakness, but he still charges into every mission out of necessity. Selling loot from his Dungeon missions is the only way for Jin-Woo to earn money for his younger sister and sick mother. The premiere does an incredible job of highlighting the dilemma and courage that resides inside Jin-Woo's heart. However, apart from Jin-Woo, you don't feel emotionally connected with any other character in the first two episodes. While you fear for Jin-Woo's life during the first dungeon mission, it's hard to care about his allies. That being said, the show has yet to introduce us to several other characters who'll play a crucial role in the narrative.

Thanks to Shunsuke Nakashige's fantastic direction, Sung Jin-Woo comes off as an endearing character as soon he appears on the screen. It's incredible how Hunters who mock Jin-Woo for being the weakest rely on his wit and quick thinking to survive the S-Class Dungeon.

A-1 Pictures is one of the big players in the Japanese animation industry, and as expected, the studio has outdone itself with Solo Leveling. They've done a stellar job with the 2D and 3D animation, and Hiroyuki Shawano's music beautifully complements the animation and the narrative.

Solo Leveling anime is in the works, and here are some of the strongest characters we can't wait to see in the upcoming adaptation.

When reading the Manhwa, you don't expect Solo Leveling's action scenes to be a brutal affair. However, the anime proves that Chugong's universe is as wicked as Jujutsu Kaisen or Vinland Saga. The anime series doesn't shy away from showing blood. In fact, it surpasses the violence shown in the source material, which works in the show's favor.

If there's one area where the premiere could've done better, it's editing. In the manhwa, when Sung Jin-Woo and his allies mistakenly enter the S-Class Dungeon, the narrative doesn't shift anywhere else until the end. However, the anime show keeps shifting to other scenarios or people during that whole encounter. Agreed, cutting off to Jin-Woo's family fits the context, but introducing the audience to another S-Class Hunter (who doesn't play any role in the first two episodes) by diverting from an intense sequence feels a little odd. That being said, Jin-Woo's journey has only begun, and the anime has excellent potential, which is evident from the quality of the premiere.

Episode 1 of Solo Leveling will be available to watch on Crunchyroll this Saturday, January 6, 2023.
