'Rapid' striker left out of squad as his club indicate Tottenham Hotspur deal is on the cards

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be closing in on signing forward Timo Werner after he was left out of the RB Leipzig squad this afternoon.

Tottenham sold star striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in August and chose not to sign a recognised striker in his place.

Son Heung-min and Richarlison have filled that gap well, but Son is now off to the Asia Cup and there are still question marks over Richarlison.

Kane was shipped off to the Bundesliga and Tottenham are now ready to bring in a new striker from Germany’s top flight…

Timo Werner edging towards Tottenham Hotspur move

HITC Football understands that Tottenham are leading the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The 27-year-old is out of favour in Germany and has been offered to the likes of Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United and West Ham United.

Tottenham appear to be closing in on Werner to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s attack and RB Leipzig have effectively confirmed a move is in the pipeline.

RB Leipzig faced Swiss side St Gallen in a friendly earlier today, meeting in Spain with the Bundesliga currently in its winter break.

A short statement from RB Leipzig confirmed that Werner was not part of the squad because he is now ‘in talks with another club’.

That club appears to be Tottenham with Postecoglou looking to get Werner back on track in North London.

Tough few years for Werner

Werner made himself one of Europe’s most exciting strikers in his first spell at RB Leipzig.

The German smashed 95 goals in 159 games to land himself a big move to Chelsea in 2020.

Werner only managed 10 goals in 56 Premier League games though and struggled to settle at Stamford Bridge, paving the way for a 2022 return to RB Leipzig.

That move was supposed to get Werner back on track but, after nine Bundesliga goals last season, he has slipped down the pecking order this term.

Still a striker with electric pace having been hailed as ‘rapid’ by former RB Leipzig teammate Tyler Adams, Werner should get plenty of chances to score in this exciting Tottenham side.

Werner would no doubt love to prove his Premier League doubters wrong and Tottenham seemingly believe that he can thrive in English football after all.
