The rumors linking Robert Lewandowski to an MLS move have at least one doubter: Chicago Fire head coach Frank Klopas.
Lewandowski has in recent months been linked to a possible move to MLS or Saudi Arabia, with rumors popping up more or less once a month in that time.
Chicago, with a massive Polish population, has been mentioned as a potential home for the Barcelona striker, but speaking to media on Thursday, Klopas poured cold water on the idea.
“It’s not feasible,” said Klopas. “Every team in [MLS] would want Lewandowski to come. But unfortunately, he has two years left in his contract.”
Klopas did allow that the Fire are looking for a striker to bolster a side that finished 24th in MLS’s Supporters’ Shield race (and 13th in a weak Eastern Conference).
However, the 57-year-old would go on to flesh out his doubts that the No. 9 will be Lewandowski, noting that “Barcelona paid over 50 million [dollars] to get him, so I don’t think it’s a player that’s going to be coming into MLS, especially right now.”
Lewandowski joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022 for €50 million, and has been nearly ever-present in the 2023-24 season. The former Bayern Munich star’s only missed matches came in October, all due to an ankle injury. He has 13 goals in 28 total appearances this season for the Catalan side.
