Game Dev Tycoon is one of those games that stand out in the foreground that can make players dump in addictive hours without them noticing it. The game has a very minimalist approach to its graphics (almost like a flash game), but gives the complete experience of running a game studio right from the early 80s.
Creating a custom console is the penultimate step in the game. This would mark the progress of the game studio into a Tier 1 game publishing empire. With such high-level rewards come a higher level of required accomplishments. In order to take the first leap in creating a console, the players (or the game studio in this case) should have a list of prerequisites completed, after which a 6-step process would provide access to making one.
Steps For A Custom Console
Step 1: The first step would be to move to the level 3 office. This would require the game studio to have a minimum of three staff members (Excluding the player) and an accumulated net value of $13M and upwards. The upgrade cost alone would cost the said amount, so it would be wise to accumulate more before switching to the new workspace.
Step 2: The next step would be to train or hire a staff member to be a design specialist. The selected team member should have 700+ design points in the core attributes in order to provide "Design Specialist" training for the same. Once done, they would be promoted to a design specialist.
Step 3: Having a design specialist in the core team would allow the player to unlock and open the R&D lab. The R&D lab is the one-stop solution for all modern-day gaming mechanics (from real life) in the game. Researching options for AAA game titles, MMO games, and Hardware Project are a part of it.
Step 4: Once the R&D Lab is set up with the required staff, players will have access to research the Hardware Project. This is an important and the foremost step in the game studio in its transition from software coding to creating hardware.
Step 5: The next step would be to hire or train a Tech Specialist. Although hiring one can be rare, training one might take some time as well. A staff member with 700+ tech capabilities in the core traits can be trained using the "Tech Specialist" training. Once completed, they would be the company's first Tech Specialist. If one is already present, players can skip this step.
Step 6: This would unlock and allow access to the hardware labs. Players can now build and design their very own custom gaming console through the "Create custom console" option at the Hardware Labs.
The cost of making a custom console can range between $11M to $150M depending on the focus of components the players chooses. The console with the most bare minimum hardware specs and research would have a heavy backlog from the fans, while the most expensive one with all the shiny techs inside will grant a bigger market share and win loyal fans.
This would include a combination of researched tech in Graphics, Game Engine, Gameplay, and Sound. Players would need to get the right balance between the four parameters based on their budget available and plan accordingly. To each his own!
Game Dev Tycoon is available to play on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Macintosh operating systems, Linux, and Classic Mac OS.
