Crunchyroll to Stream One of the Longest-Running Anime of All Time

Chibi Maruko-chan, one of the longest-running anime TV series in history, is set to stream on Crunchyroll.

In Crunchyroll's recently updated Winter 2024 anime lineup, it was revealed that the English-subtitled version of Chibi Maruko-chan would be joining the platform on Jan. 14, 2024. CBR covered some of the other biggest titles heading to Crunchyroll this winter season. Chibi Maruko-chan was also announced to be receiving an English dub at a later date and will stream in the United States, Canada, Singapore and the Philippines. The series is expected to include both older and newer episodes.

Major anime streamer Crunchyroll confirms that One Piece Episode 1071 really did crash its servers, validating the anime's global reach.

While Chibi Maruko-chan streams some of the earlier episodes on YouTube, this is a big coup for fans wanting to enjoy their favorite anime in one place. First launched as a manga by Momoko Sakura in 1986, Chibi Maruko-chan spanned 18 volumes before concluding in 2022. The series spawned two anime series, the second of which is the fifth-longest ongoing anime of all time with 1,417 episodes to date. This surpasses even One Piece's massive episode count of 1,088 current main episodes.

However, One Piece's episode count isn't the only thing surpassed by Chibi Maruko-chan. The series is a fan-favorite in Japan, ranking fourth in the most-watched anime series in Japan in 2023. Meanwhile, in a recent interview by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, where he stated, among other things, that the anime boom was in decline and approaching a dead end, he surprisingly admitted that his franchise's popularity paled in comparison to both series. With Gundam's core themes overshadowed by the allure of giant robots, he declared, "When you look at individual works, it [Gundam] cannot match the popularity of Chibi Maruko-chan and One Piece."
