Bleach's New Villain Has The Most Absurd Power In Anime

Warning: Spoilers for Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 20A new villain appearing in Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War is packing one of the most powerful abilities ever seen in anime, making him almost literally omnipotent. It's only thanks to the unique set of skills of his opponent, Kenpachi Zaraki, that Gremmy did not decimate the entire Soul Society alone.

Episode #20 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War focuses on Kenpachi Zaraki and his battle with a clever Sternritter by the name of Gremmy Thoumeaux, who was initially attacking the triage station run by Isane using a false persona. It turned out to be far more than just a fake name, though; Gremmy had actually imagined an entirely different being that seemed to have its own desire to survive, and which he brutally dismissed back into nothingness when it failed in its attack. Zaraki came in at that point to battle the real Gremmy, only to learn that Gremmy's schrift ability, "V - The Visionary" allowed him to make anything he could imagine into reality. Only Zaraki's new Shikai allowed him to grab the victory, but if Gremmy had more control over his own ability, he would have been unbeatable.

Gremmy's Imagination Ability is One of Bleach's Most Broken

Bleach: Gremmy's true form, a brain in a jar.

Needless to say, that's an incredibly powerful ability that makes Gremmy an opponent who's not to be messed with. So long as he imagines himself surviving and winning, there's really no way to defeat him. However, for as powerful as imagination can be, it is also hard to control and can become a double-edged sword. Kenpachi Zaraki quickly figures out that Gremmy's reactions to his own actions will shape Gremmy's thoughts, and in turn what he's capable of imagining, and thus begins a relentless series of powerful attacks that nearly scare Gremmy into imagining his own death.

Gremmy proves just how ultimate his power is, though, when he summons a meteor from the sky that he claims will destroy the entire Soul Society, mirroring an attack showcased by Madara in Naruto. Zaraki uses his new Shikai release to split the meteor, shocking Gremmy. The turning point of that battle is when Gremmy attempts to mirror the power displayed by Zaraki, but it turns out to be too much for his imaginary body, and Gremmy is revealed to actually be little more than a brain in a jar. Of course, like with many overpowered abilities in anime, it's hard to judge Gremmy's schrift correctly, as he could have simply imagined for Zaraki to disappear, but he ended up being defeated by the limits of his own imagination instead.

Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War's Gremmy Thoumeaux

The battle between Gremmy and Zaraki is definitely one of the more interesting ones so far, pitting two very different abilities against one another, yet managing to surprise with the seemingly superior ability being defeated. Ultimately, it was just a bad match-up for Gremmy. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War still has plenty of Quincy Sternritter powers to reveal, though, but Gremmy's ability will still go down in history as one of the most overpowered ever.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
