Tsundere is the most well-known of the classic "dere" anime types. These characters are often some of the most popular in a series, winning fans over with their combative and spunky attitudes that contrast their secret shy sides. But while most tsundere characters are great, not all of them are likable.
Some tsundere characters take their antics a step too far, often becoming downright mean with their words and acts of violence. Many tsunderes are so cruel they take the fun out of the trope, leaving fans uncomfortable as they continuously abuse their potential love interests. From Love Hina's Naru Narusegawa to Kyouya Sata from Wolf Girl and Black Prince, these are some of the worst examples of the tsundere archetype in anime.
10 Inuyasha (Inuyasha)
Inuyasha is one of the rare male tsunderes of anime. He's brash, abrasive, and though his feelings for Kagome are clear, he's almost always arguing with her. To some, he's one of the better examples of a tsundere character out there. However, his bad temper and meanspiritedness say otherwise.
While there's no denying Inuyasha cares for Kagome deep down, he can be far too harsh with her at times. He's so mean that Kagome has often questioned whether he truly loves her or not. Even if he means well, such bad behavior makes him far less likable overall.
9 Chitoge Kirisaki (Nisekoi)
Chitoge Kirisaki is the lead female of the popular series Nisekoi who finds herself forced into a fake relationship with protagonist Raku Ichijou. Though she's a popular character from the series, her tsundere act is a bit much. Chitoge is one of the many violent tsunderes out there, and many fans have named her as one of the most abusive.
Chitoge has a very bad temper, causing her to lash out at just about anyone. She especially likes to target Raku, often using him as a punching bag for her anger. This gag is admittedly funny, but it definitely gets old after a point.
8 Taiga Aisaka (Toradora!)
Toradora!'s Taiga Aisaka is probably one of the most beloved tsundere girls of all time. But even popular tsunderes have their flaws, and Taiga has plenty.
Taiga is such a fierce and brutal character she's even earned herself the nickname "Palmtop Tiger." She's a brat with a moody attitude and a surprisingly strong bite, making her one tsundere no one should mess with. While she's got an impressive amount of sass that most fans love, others feel her violent nature is off-putting. What's worse is that Taiga never develops out of this habit and still proceeds to throw temper tantrums and assault others by the end of Toradora!.
7 Mio Isurugi (MM!)
Many tsundere characters display violent traits, but few take it quite as far as Mio Isurugi from MM!. Throughout the series, she beats up protagonist Taro Sado at any chance she gets. Whether she's angry or not, Mio is more than willing to give him a beat down and even seems to take pleasure in doing so.
Mio's hotheadedness and violent outbursts are often used for comedic purposes. They can be funny sometimes, but they're definitely overkill, making her feel like a one-trick pony. Her extreme tsundere personality feels less cute and more annoying as a result.
6 Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Whether or not Evangelion's Asuka Langley Soryu is a true tsundere is up for debate, but she's certainly got many of the basic characteristics of the archetype. Asuka is a fiery redhead with a bad attitude and an even worse ego. She's overly competitive and gets highly jealous of her fellow Eva pilots, especially Shinji.
Asuka is a fiercely popular character within the Evangelion franchise, and many love her for her tsundere personality traits. However, she's an extreme example of the archetype. Even with her softer side, Asuka just seems too mean to be likable at times, taking her jealousy and tough exterior way too far.
5 Kyou Fujibayashi (Clannad)
Kyou Fujibayashi is the resident tsundere of Clannad and probably one of the series' most popular characters. But though most adore her spunk and tough girl attitude, it's sometimes the worst part of her character.
Throughout the entire series, Kyou is pushy, rude, and pretty annoying. She's clearly got feelings for Tomoya but refuses to acknowledge them and instead tries to force him with her sister, despite it making them both extremely uncomfortable. Like many other tsunderes, she's also very violent, taking her anger out on Tomoya and Sunohara whenever she can. While most fans consider this part of her charm, it gets to be a bit much sometimes.
4 Kyouya Sata (Wolf Girl & Black Prince)
Kyouya Sata is the lead male of the classic shojo series Wolf Girl and Black Prince. Though the story portrays him as a heartthrob, he's honestly anything but. Kyouya is a cruel love interest who puts Erika Shinohara through some of the worst treatment of any shojo protagonist.
Kyouya does get better over time, but by then, the damage is basically already done. His cruelty goes far beyond that of a normal tsundere and is incredibly uncomfortable. He's one of the worst male protagonists in shojo, and many can't stand watching his mean-spirited antics throughout Wolf Girl and Black Prince.
3 Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya)
For years, fans have debated over whether Haruhi Suzumiya counts as a tsundere character. While she may not always have the shyness of a classic tsundere, Haruhi definitely displays some attributes of the archetype, especially her stubbornness and refusal to admit her true feelings at times. But whether she's a true tsundere girl or not, Haruhi's popularity as a character has definitely taken a hit over the years.
These days, most see Haruhi as nothing but irritating. She's rude, selfish, and has little to no redeeming qualities. With that in mind, it's no wonder she's become such an unliked character. In fact, it's more surprising that she was ever popular to begin with.
2 Naru Narusegawa (Love Hina)
Love Hina is a mostly forgotten old-school harem series centered around the relationship between protagonist Keitaro and Naru Narusegawa, one of anime's classic tsundere girls. Naru is one of the early tsunderes and helped shape much of what the archetype is today. However, her influence isn't all good.
Naru is one of the earliest examples of a violent tsundere. Often taking her anger out on Keitaro, she tends to abuse him verbally and physically in nearly every episode. While this is played off as slap-stick comedy, her overly aggressive attitude doesn't bode well for most fans.
1 Louise Françoise (The Familiar Of Zero)
Louise Françoise is, without a doubt, one of the most infamous tsundere characters in anime history. Throughout the entirety of The Familiar of Zero, Louise does nothing but abuse her alleged love interest, Saito. Not a single episode goes by without her beating or berating him.
The dynamic between Louise and Saito is utterly unbearable, and it's a wonder that Saito wants to be with her at all after everything she does to him. Coupled with her bratty and selfish personality, Louise has more than earned the hate she's received from fans.
