10 Most Lovable Best Friend Characters In Anime

Anime fans often love a given series' main character the most, since such characters are written to be more compelling and memorable than anyone else, like Son Goku and Tohru Honda. Still, the main character's family members or best friends might be a series' best character instead, at least according to some fans. Supporting characters sometimes feel like the true star of the show.

Such is the case for plenty of characters who are written as the main character's best friend. The most lovable best friend characters quickly proved why they were worthy of being the protagonist's BFF, and even the rough tsundere ones have a wonderful soft side that they'll only show the main character.

10 Killua Zoldyck (Hunter X Hunter)

Killua smiling in Hunter X Hunter.

Hunter x Hunter protagonist Gon Freecss is fairly popular as a shonen hero, but it's his best bud, the assassin Killua Zoldyck, who truly stole everyone's hearts. Killua was introduced as a cocky, confident 12-year-old boy with deadly skills and a punkish attitude, and Hunter x Hunter fans couldn't get enough of it.

Killua was compelling on his own, but he truly shined when he shared the spotlight with Gon. The two of them had strong chemistry as friends and rivals, competing to see who could master Nen faster and show off their best techniques. Gon also brought out Killua's secret soft side, such as his fondness for chocolate and his "cat boy" subtheme.

Winry with her hand on her chin in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Winry Rockbell was the girl next door for the Elric brothers in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and was also their best friend in their rural town Resembool. Ed and Al argued over who would marry Winry when they grew up, though for the longest time, the three of them were just platonic friends.

Winry was written as Ed's best friend and as a potential lover in the story, which gave them terrific chemistry as fellow tsunderes. Winry also had strong appeal as a smart and successful girl who knew the ins and outs of automail, which made her more than just a token best friend or love interest.

8 Taiju Oki (Dr. Stone)

The cool, aloof Senku Ishigami would hesitate to openly call anyone his best friend in Dr. Stone, but at heart, he knows that Taiju Oki is indeed his best bud. Taiju and Senku complement each other well in every century, with Senku being the brains and Taiju graciously accepting the role of brawn.

Taiju was always welcome to help Senku build model rockets and other contraptions in 21st-century Japan along with Yuzuriha, and in the Stone Age, Senku needs Taiju's brawn more than ever. Along with Yuzuriha, Taiju was one of the Kingdom of Science's first recruits, all so he could support his brainy pal Senku in the mission of a lifetime.

7 Nobara Kugisaki (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Nobara Kugisaki from Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen protagonist Yuji Itadori had a few friends at his school, but when he became a sorcerer, he restarted his social life at the Tokyo technical college for sorcerers. There, he met Nobara Kugisaki, a fellow first-year student who quickly became one of Yuji's best friends of all time.

Nobara is a lovable tsundere with a good heart, ferocious combat skills, and a healthy perspective on her place in the world as a 21st-century girl. Fans joke that Nobara and Yuji share one brain cell as prankster friends who annoy Megumi, too. However, there's no hint of romance between them, so they may remain platonic best friends for some time yet.

6 Yasutora "Chad" Sado (Bleach)

Chad gives a thumbs-up in Bleach.

Ichigo Kurosaki's best friend in Bleach, Chad, may not be the strongest fighter in the anime, but he has a strong heart. Chad is compelling because of his wise and humble view on strength. He was once a frustrated bully, but then Chad learned that true strength is about defending others, a lesson Chad learned well.

Chad is even more lovable because of his honest, innocent personality as a gentle giant kuudere. He may not laugh and joke much, but Chad does have a subtly goofy side, such as his manly thumbs-up gestures and his refreshing honesty to lighten the mood if things get tense.

5 Becky Blackbell (Spy X Family)

Anya Forger is an iconic and lovable character from Spy x Family as a memeable little hero who loves peanuts, but fans shouldn't overlook her new best friend, Becky Blackbell. Becky may act like a pint-sized ojou-sama at times, but she is kind to Anya and has remarkable patience for Anya's nonsense.

Becky became Anya's much-needed friend and helped Anya explore Ostania's high society on friendly outings together, all while fiercely defending Anya from Damian Desmond's nonstop harassment. To round things out, Becky even has an innocent crush on Anya's foster father Loid Forger.

4 Inosuke Hashibira (Demon Slayer)

Demon Slayer Inosuke Beast Breathing in the anime

At times, the brash demon slayer Inosuke Hashibira doesn't feel cuddly at all, such as when he's laughing while slashing up demons in bloody combat. In other scenes in Demon Slayer, though, Inosuke has a surprisingly soft side as a true tsundere, such as his happiness anytime Tanjiro compliments him.

Inosuke is most cuddly when his boar helmet is off and he's just goofing off with Zenitsu and Tanjiro as part of a classic anime trio, such as their night together at a ryokan inn. Inosuke also amused fans in the Mugen Train movie when Enmu made him dream about everyone as animals going on fun adventures together.

3 Narumi Momose (Wotakoi)

Wotakoi's co-stars Narumi Momose and Hirotaka Nifuji are each other's best friends, so each counts as a main character's best friend in anime. They're both wonderful people, but Narumi is definitely the cuddlier one between them, as a total deredere who enjoys meeting people and giving them emotional support.

Narumi amuses josei anime fans with her fierce passion for manga, BL fiction, and her well-meaning interference in everyone's personal lives, acting like everyone's caring sister no matter what. Narumi and Hirotaka also go way back to elementary school, when they used to play games together, and now they're co-workers at the same office.

2 Pochita (Chainsaw Man)

Pochita is happy with denji in chainsaw man

The concept of dogs being "man's best friend" was given a bizarre but wholesome twist in Chainsaw Man, with Pochita the puppy-like chainsaw devil loyally sticking by Denji's side when no one else would. For years, it was just the two of them, and Denji would have been lost without his devil dog friend.

When Denji was killed at the hands of the zombie devil, he and Pochita fused and were reborn as Chainsaw Man. The two good friends had finally become one, and from there, Denji would meet new friends like Aki and Power, though none of them were even half as lovable as Pochita was.

1 Hitohito Tadano (Komi Can't Communicate)

Tadano in class in Komi Can't Communicate.

The dandere Shoko Komi is Komi Can't Communicate's star, while Hitohito Tadano is her first and best friend. Early in the series, Tadano spoke up and connected with the quiet, misunderstood Komi, and he helped Komi launch her plan to make 100 friends before graduation.

Ever since then, Tadano has been a pillar for this anime's timid heroine, even if other people write him off as boring and unremarkable. Tadano has done a bit of everything for Komi as her best friend, all while proving himself a kind, empathetic, and altruistic boy who will do anything for a pal without asking for anything in return.
