Countless anime couples, like Loid and Yor from Spy x Family, harness undeniably stable and loving relationships that bring wholesomeness to even the most tragic situations. The search for true love is certainly not easy, especially in the world of anime, where romance is usually placed on the back burner in favor of jaw-dropping plot twists and extravagant fights.
Even in the early days of anime, a romantic subplot was usually at the very least present as a subplot, if not the mainstay of a series. From Dragon Ball Z to Full Metal Alchemist, pure relationships like Goku and Chi Chi have been an exemplary part of portraying the selfless love that is needed for a couple to succeed together. These couples, in particular, have stood the test of time to become the longest lasting relationships in anime.
Yusuke And Keiko (Yu Yu Hakusho)
From the humble beginnings of the anime, Keiko and Yusuke have shown immense love for each other, even since childhood. Like many anime couples, the two bickered often, but when things got serious, their adoration was as clear as day. Even when Yusuke tells Keiko he plans to marry her out of the blue, she casually agrees without another thought, the two acting as if the proposal was no surprise at all.
Their bond is put to the test and almost comes to its breaking point when Yusuke asks Keiko to put all her trust in her boyfriend and wait three years for him to return from the demon world, his life being taken over by his job as a Spirit Detective. Sure enough, over 4 years later Keiko surrenders and screams for him to come back and Yusuke suddenly reappears so the two can live happily ever after.
Arguably one of the cutest anime couples of all-time, Edward and Winry bonded through their shared passion for mechanic work, seeming like lovers even before the unforgettable events of the series. As childhood friends who always had feelings for each other, even when butting heads, the pair found safety and excitement with one another as time went on.
Their relationship was a key defining part of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. At the end of the first series, Edward's confession to Winry was accepted with disbelief and relief, setting the stage for their even stronger relationship Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. When Edward proposed to Winry using the Law of Equivalent Exchange in the second series, they finally married in the year 1917.
Minato And Kushina (Naruto)
For a relationship with scarce screen time in the Naruto series, Kushina and Minato made a big impression on viewers. Seeing how much the husband and wife cared for each other, as well as Naruto when he was a baby, was something that brought a certain compassion to the anime.
Many fans still push for a prequel about Minato, since he and Kushina are both well-written, formidable characters with an unbreakable bond. Minato rescuing Kushina after she was abducted by the Hidden Cloud and falling for her while the rest of the Hidden Leaf Village treated her like an outsider was a defining moment of not only the series but of their relationship. Despite their untimely deaths, they remain an iconic couple and an inspiration to their son throughout his life.
Naruto And Hinata (Naruto)
Another couple with huge staying power in anime is undoubtedly Hinata and Naruto, especially since they are now married with kids in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
The two have one of the best romance arcs in anime, just beginning to blossom when Hinata sacrifices herself while protecting Naruto during the "Invasion of Pain" arc, proving and confessing her undying love for him. When Naruto's outgoing nature collides with Hinata's timidness, they balance each other out perfectly. The Last: Naruto the Movie delves much deeper into their dynamic and their equally immense feelings, but the pair has been admired since the early days of the series before their love was requited.
Sailor Neptune And Sailor Uranus (Sailor Moon)
First appearing in the third season of the original Sailor Moon, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune have always been a package deal, even more so later on in the series. There's a profound reason why they are considered by many to be one of the greatest LGBTQ+ couples in anime history.
Their tender tale of love, which was once (and sometimes still is) a victim of censorship (via IGN), knows no bounds. Having been together in the anime since the year 2000s, the girls still share an apartment together while behaving like spouses, raising baby Sailor Saturn and wear matching rings.
Sailor Moon And Tuxedo Mask
There aren't many anime couples that have a relationship that binds them together in their present life and every single one before it, but this heroic duo does. Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask have been a couple since the original anime in 1990s, still remaining together till the end of time, despite their constant arguing in the first half of the series.
Tuxedo Mask (aka Mamoru) isn't even aware that he is destined to be with and protect Usagi for a fair bit of the anime, since he would lose consciousness while his alter-ego took over. Even when Mamoru is brainwashed by Queen Beryl and briefly becomes evil, he refuses to hurt Usagi. Once he learns of his true identity and his destiny to forever be with Sailor Moon, the one-of-a-kind couple become unstoppable.
Meliodas And Elizabeth (The Seven Deadly Sins)
The Seven Deadly Sins might have only been around since 2014, but Elizabeth and Meliodas have endured many years of horrible luck together, cursed for over 3,000 as punishment for their acts during the Holy War.
While Elizabeth is forced to die over and over again whenever using her powers, while Meliodas must live forever. Having to watch his beloved perish before his eyes endlessly and enduring the emotional pain of her death countless times still isn't enough for the unfortunate lovers to call it quits. No matter the circumstances or year, they stick by and look after one another, madly in love.
Vegeta And Bulma (Dragon Ball Z)
The enemies-to-lovers trope never gets old and Bulma and Vegeta are an excellent example. Once on opposite sides of an enormous battle, Bulma put aside their differences and took him to Earth to help nurse Vegeta back to health.
From there, the contrasting pair slowly came to develop a deep love, having a child named Trunks. But, unlike most anime, their story didn't end there. In fact, Vegeta and Bulma only continue to grow closer, making sure to support their partner wholeheartedly. Vegeta not only learned how to be an amazing husband and father, but became a better person overall. Since September 2000 when season six of Dragon Ball Z aired, the pair have been inseperable.
Inuyasha And Kagome (Inuyasha)
Inuyash and Kagome's relationship is deeply complex, but their everlasting dedication surpassed every obastacle in their way. As one of the best anime couples of the early 2000s, it took a long road of trial and error for the lovers to finally admit their true feelings.
When the time finally came, in InuYasha: The Final Act, when Inuyasha swears to protect Kagome with his life, then leans in to kiss her (until they are interrupted). Inuyasha even waited for Kagome to return to the link between their two worlds, Bone Eater's Well, for three years after their final battle with Naraku. Now, over 20 years since they first met in the Feudal era, the unlikely couple is happily married. This is shown clearly in the first episode Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, which follows their daughter as she fights the forces of evil.
Goku And Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball Z)
In the earliest episodes of Dragon Ball Z in 1990, Goku and Chi-Chi made a promise to each other that would prove to last into present day. Years later, the loyal twosome fulfilled that promise and got married, even though Goku wasn't 100% what marriage was a first.
Knowing each other since they were children, Chi-Chi and Goku's relationship always has a spark of innocence that plenty of couples eventually lose, but not them. Though she may be a bit eccentric, Chi-Chi is completely infatuated with Goku, as seen when she stays by his side the entire time during the Android Saga, when Goku is put on bed rest and must be taken care of. Of course, Goku also continues to do his best to protect her and their son, displaying his adoration for his family.
