The are several heartbreaking deaths in anime. A child's death is even more heartbreaking. Though death's like Jiraiya's are still tragic, the death of a child character has a different impact.
Even if the child is a minor character, it still has the same devastating affect on fans. Young characters die from various unfortunate circumstances, but typically from instances of war and illness. Nevertheless, most of these deaths came as a shock to viewers.

The First and Second Hokage: Hashirama and Tobirama familiarize Naruto fans with the Senju clan. However, there are two more Senju brothers who died at a much younger age than their older, well-known siblings during their time as soldiers.

Their mother dies from her injuries, and the two siblings eventually live on their own after leaving their aunt's house. Seita finally finds food, but he is too late, as Setsuko has already died from malnutrition. Seita later dies the same way at a train station days after his younger sister's death.

In This Corner of the World is a Japanese anime film set during World War II. The film follows a happy young woman named Suzu, who marries a man named Shusaku. Unfortunately, the air raids begin in Japan and Shusaku gets drafted into the Japanese Navy. Suzu spends time with her six-year-old niece, Harumi, with Shusaku's family nearby the harbor. One day, Harumi and Suzu are walking near the harbor when a bomb detonates and instantly kills Harumi and causes Suzu to lose her right hand. Harumi's death sends Suzu into a depression and is also devastating to viewers.

Meiko Honma, known as Menma to her friends, is the female protagonist of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. After a freak accident, Menma dies at just 10 years old. She then appears to her friend Jintan as a ghost. She hopes to reunite her friends, the Super Peace Busters.
Menma wants to fulfill another wish Jintan is unaware of. Jintan blames himself for Menma's death but he doesn't show much emotion. Menma fulfills Jintan's mother's request of allowing him to cry.
Barefoot Gen is based on the eponymous manga series by Keiji Nakazawa and his own experiences during the bombing of Hiroshima. As a warning, this film is not meant for the weak-hearted, and is extremely graphic when it comes to showing the aftereffects of the bombing on the people of Hiroshima. Many characters die in Barefoot Gen. The youngest to perish is Gen's youngest sister, Tomoko, who is a newborn. She dies due to malnutrition and radiation poisoning after Gen loses everyone in his family except his mother in a fire during the bombing.
4 Ushio's Short Life Was Full Of Tragedy (Clannad)
Ushio is Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furakawa's daughter in the anime Clannad. Ushio's mother dies shortly after her birth, and her appearance greatly mirrors her mother. Ushio inherits the same illness as her mother, and she becomes gravely ill with a fever during the winter. Ushio's father wants to take advantage of the time he can spend with Ushio by taking her on vacation. However, Ushio falls unconscious and quickly perishes. It is assumed her father dies after collapsing from grief shortly after her death.
Nina Tucker is a fun-loving five-year-old girl in the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise. She greatly cares for her father and her huge dog, Alexander. She frequently calls Alphonse and Edward big and little brother, respectively in the manga and anime series. Nina tragically dies from a mercy killing performed by State Alchemist-killer Scar. Before her death, her father Shou performs the chimera experiment on her, fusing her with her dog Alexander. During her short life, Nina was betrayed by those she trusted most.

He quickly dies from his injuries, and it still upsets Naruto fans because it's considered one of the most unnecessary deaths in anime. Neji unfortunately perishes before he can change the Hyuga clan and never gets to see the main and branch houses at peace.

Kaori Miyazono is a main character in the tear-jerking anime Your Lie in April. The anime follows the life of 14-year-old piano prodigy Kosei Arima, who unexpectedly loses his mother. Kaori is a talented violinist who convinces Kosei to play piano again. Unfortunately, Kaori suffers from anemia and has an upcoming risky surgery. She tragically dies during surgery, and she reveals in a letter that she has been in love with Kosei since she was five-years old. Make sure tissues are nearby when watching this anime.
