If you're a fan of Final Fantasy, Square Enix has a really exciting lineup waiting for you in 2024. Releasing its annual New Year's greeting to fans, the leaders behind the RPG powerhouse developer/publisher shared some of their plans for the coming year, and there's a lot to unpack.

Big Things On The Horizon

Final Fantasy 16

The biggest news out of the love letter to fans comes from Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P, who serves as both the producer of Final Fantasy 16 and the director and producer of Final Fantasy 14. Yoshida stated in his message that the Final Fantasy 16 team will be hard at work getting the second expansion DLC for Final Fantasy 16 ready for its players. Titled Rising Tide, the DLC is planned for release sometime in the coming spring, and based on that message, it can be inferred that we shouldn't be expecting any delays. "All those in Creative Business Unit III, myself included, will continue to put our everything into game development, with the player experience always at the forefront of our minds!" he said.

Additionally, Yoshida promoted the fifth installment of Final Fantasy 14, titled Dawntrail. Current estimates for its release window have been reported for summer 2024, but he may have thrown that window into question a little bit, announcing that "we’ll be taking you all on a brand-new adventure" in the expansion following the Final Fantasy 14 fan festival. That festival is currently scheduled to take place in just a few days, from January 7-8, so we'll see if it's arriving early or if we're just getting another sneak peek.

"Don’t worry, we’ve got something in store for you. - Ichiro Hazama

Perhaps the most anticipated game in the lineup, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was addressed by its producer Yoshinori Kitase. The action roleplaying game, which serves as a sequel to 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year for RPG fans, and it's currently planned for release on February 9 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. While Kitase didn't have much more news to tell us about the upcoming game, he said he is hoping fans are still enjoying the remake for "its emotional story, that explores the characters’ relationships, and exploring the title’s vast world map."

Something For The Less Traditional Fans Too?

And if you're interested in taking a break from traditional RPGs and keeping time with music, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm Final Bar Line producer Ichiro Hazama made a vague promise that his team is cooking up something special as well, saying, "Don’t worry, we’ve got something in store for you. Our young team of developers is hard at work creating something new, so I hope you don’t mind waiting until we’re ready to share more!"

Additionally, if you're more a fan of the more old-school, pixelated style, Final Fantasy Brave Exivus series producer Kei Hirono also seems to have something up his sleeve. "I’m hoping we’ll be able to surprise all of you this year with the games and other things we’ve got lined up!" he said in his message.

Whatever your flavor of Final Fantasy game, it seems like Square Enix has a lot going on in 2024, and we can't wait to share the excitement with you as more is revealed.
